Jose Gross – Sound Engineering & Music Production course leader

Hi. My name is Jose Gross and I am the course leader and director at The Recording Workshop.

I am a musician (guitar and keyboards), song writer, producer and sound engineer. I started playing in bands in 1968. In the mid 70′s I co-founded a psychedelic rock band called Here & Now.

After many years working as a guitarist and keyboard player in a number of rock bands such as Blank Space I started working as sound engineer and producer in the late 70′s at Street Level Recordings in Maida Vale. I started producing Funk in the mid 80′s and House tracks such as Heaven 4 which got to number 7 in the DJ Mag House Charts in the late 80′s under the name of Saracen and have been involved in numerous remix & production projects since in collaboration with Monkey Pilot from the Whirl-Y-Gig as well as many others. As founder of Ambient band Virtual Dawn I played many festivals as well as had tracks released on several compilation albums such as Whirl-Y-Waves

As a keyboard player I started using MIDI since it started and computer sequencers since 1987. I started with Steinberg’s Pro16 in 1987 on a Commodore 64, Steinberg Pro 24 on Atari in 1988 and Cubase in 1989. I started working with Logic around 1992 and later on with ProTools on Mac in 1999.

My approach is to present the subject as realistically as I can. Explaining how to use the equipment and how real studios used it and their general attitude.
I don’t have more than 6 people in a class. I make every effort to make sure everyone understands everything that is taught.
I use the equipment as much as possible and give the students as many opportunities as possible to use it and also ask questions.
